Stockholm Convention

Stockholm Convention The Stockholm Convention is the international instrument that regulates the treatment of toxic substances, sponsored by the United Nations Program for Environment (UNEP). This agreement was the result of long years of negotiations to obtain legal commitments from countries to urgently bind the elimination of all Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

The Convention determines a dozen compounds on which it is necessary to take priority action, is known as the "dirty dozen", which includes intentionally produced chemicals such as pesticides, PCBs, dioxins and furans.

The Stockholm Convention has been signed by 151 countries and currently 34 countries have already ratified it. Chile signed the Convention on May 23, 2001, and ratified it in July 2004 by the Congress and our country is among those who undertake to implement those agreements.
