Basel Convention

The Basel Convention aims to reduce the volume of trade waste in order to protect human health and the environment by establishing a system for controlling exports and imports of hazardous wastes and their disposal.

The Convention defines wastes that are considered hazardous. Any party to the Convention may add to this list other classified hazardous waste into their national legislation.

It is considered as a Transboundary movement any movement of hazardous wastes or other wastes from an area under the national jurisdiction of one State to or through an area under the national jurisdiction of another State or to or through an area not under the national jurisdiction of any State, provided at least two States are involved in the movement.
